Winners are grinners: Sri Sumangala players celebrate their win in the Schools division final. The team defeated last year’s champions Ananda.
Sri Sumangala and Mansfield Lions emerged champions in their respective divisions at the Carnival of Cricket 2018 conducted by the Sri Lanka Sports Association of Queensland last weekend, September 8 and 9.
The tournament, held at the Whites Hill Reserve, Camp Hill, was in its fourth year and last year’s champions Ananda met Sri Sumangala in the final of the Schools division. Sri Sumangala chased down Ananda’s 5 for 65 (7 overs), winning in the final ball to total 3 for 68.
In the Open (Clubs) division, Mansfield Lions had a thrilling win by scoring 66 for the loss of one wicket in 6.2 overs after Wolf Pack totalled 65 in 6.3 overs.
Despite a hold-up due to rain on Saturday, the match schedule was completed, and a good crowd turned out on both days. The tournament received significant sponsorship from the Brisbane City Council and chief guest was Calamvale ward Councillor Angela Owen. Cr Ian McKenzie (Coorparoo) also was in attendance.
SLSAQ president Prasad Kodikara said: “The tournament was a roaring success. The atmosphere created was awesome, with a lot of cricket enjoyed by many and with fantastic music from Sam and Shane Weerapuli. The food stall was managed by Thilani Catering and as usual they supplied delicious Sri Lankan food.
“It was a very keenly contested tournament. The presentation was first class. Cr Owen presented the winner’s trophy, with prize money, to Sri Sumangala and Mansfield Lions. Credit and thanks go to the management committee and cricket sub-committee for a well-organised tournament.”
