Tharjini leads Sri Lanka to Asian netball championship title

Reaching high: Sri Lanka’s Tharjini Sivalingam dominated the M1 Asian Netball Championships in Singapore.

Sri Lanka ran out deserving winners at the M1 Asian Netball Championships in Singapore today (Sunday, September 9).

Sri Lanka beat the hosts, Singapore, 69-50 in the final, with goal-scoring ace Tharjini Sivalingam, at 6 feet 10 inches, totalling dominating the court.

At the end of the first half, Sri Lanka led 32-26 after pulling away from 16-all in the first quarter.  The Lankans led 50-38 at the end of the third quarter and never looked like falling back.

Sri Lanka convincingly beat Hong Kong 55-46 in the quarter-finals, and Singapore got the better off Malaysia 51-43

Twelve teams took part in the tournament – hosts Singapore, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Brunei, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Philippines, Thailand, India, Pakistan and Maldives.

The victory ensured Sri Lanka’s passage to next year’s World Cup in Liverpool in England
